Penrhyn Quarry history

The slate quarry is the largest in the world and has been at the centre of UK natural stone quarrying and it's heritage since the thirteenth-century and a major operation for over 400 years.

Uniquely, the slate is 500 million years old and is widely recognised as the finest natural slate in the world.

The main pit is nearly 1.6 km long and 370 metres deep, and was worked by nearly 3,000 quarrymen.  But today with the introduction of technology and automation the workforce is nearer 200.
